It is 7 a.m. on a Friday morning, and you already made two sales for this week. You don’t have a boss to make you get up at the time you scheduled. And while you certainly don’t have the kind of money you want, you know over time your residual income will build. If you can just continue to survive in this business for a few years, it will all be worth it. So, why should you get out of bed this morning?
1. You need to keep your sales pipeline full. There is nothing more valuable to a sales professional than a full sales pipeline of prospects. If your goal is to make sales, your motivation will go up and down constantly. Once you make a couple sales, you no longer feel the need to make more sales or get out of bed. However, if you have had no sales for a week, you turn desperate. Rather than making “sales” your goal, shoot for a full sales pipeline. This goal will provide a steady source of motivation and a reason to work every day. You will know that even after a good couple of days you still need to find new prospects to keep your pipeline full. When you have a tough week, you don’t feel desperate because you know you already have several good prospects who are going to go with you soon.
2. You need to form lasting habits. I recently read The Power of Habit, and it was a great read. One of your top goals should be to develop effective sales habits. The best one I can think of is the habit of starting work at the same time each day. Don’t allow a good week or even a depressing week to alter your habits of hard work and prospecting.
3. Build for the future. Too many sales agents think only short term and lose motivation when they feel like they have already achieved a short term goal. Or motivation loss is even worse when they feel like they cannot achieve one. This is a major mistake because a year from now your prospecting efforts today will make a big impact. Even if your week is not going well, you never know which client you might meet who will add several hundred per month to your income. So don’t give up! I hope this short article will motivate you tomorrow to get out of bed; commit to this business full time; and get out in the field to start building your sales pipeline, your effective habits and your future.
