Survive Your Way to Success
Survive Your Way to Success
Apr 15Let’s be honest, it is really hard to succeed in the merchant services business as a sales agent. As a successful agent turned recruiter, most agents expect me to tell them how amazing it is and how rich they will become their first month in the business but, that is not reality. When you start in this business you need to remember you are starting a business and that is one of the most difficult and rewarding things you will ever do. Here are a few tips…
1. Stop choosing to stay or leave. Pick a processing partner that gives you the resources you need and the service your customers want and then decide that you are going to do this business for 12 months before thinking about other options. If that means getting an evening job to supplement income or if it means working like a crazy person, be willing to do that. Your efforts will pay off.
2. Find someone successful and do what they do. This seems so easy but, I talk to agents all the time who are making 1 sale a week and tell me, “I watched your videos but, I don’t like your pitch so I’m saying…” HELLO! When I was selling full time, I was getting 3 to 5 new accounts per week and I still get 8+ accounts per month selling 1 day a week. There is no special trick to it, I have just been doing it a while and I know what works. Find someone who is currently in the field selling like myself or another agent you know is successful and steal their pitch, steal their business model, do what they do. When you start out in this business, find a system that works and then use that system until you have enough experience to know how to best customize the pitch to suit your personality.
3. Leverage your customers, your family and your friends. Again, this is not what people want to hear but, if you want to succeed, you need some leverage. Tell your family and friends that you are going to do this business for at least one year and see what you can build. Most of them will be supportive and even try to help. If your friend was starting a new business you would want to help right? So why would take that same opportunity away from your friends and family? Give them your business cards, let them help you, ask for referrals anywhere in the United States. Give your first few customers the kind of support that you can only offer when you have a few customers. Become their friend and business partner and ask them for advice. Say, “Bob, you have been my customer now for about a month and you know the kind of service I offer and I am really trying to grow my business in this area, any tips on how I can do that?” You will get great advice and probably some great referrals.
I remember days where I didn’t have enough money to buy a printer cartridge to print an application or enough gas to get to an appointment. I know what it is like to pay bills late in order to pursue my dream. What is the worst that can happen? I am here to tell you that this business is AWESOME!!!! if you can survive long enough to succeed. DON’T GIVE UP, DON’T GIVE UP, DON’T GIVE UP!!!! Stay with it, pay the price and build not only a stable income but a bright future for you and your family. I am here to help, if you need anything or have any questions just let me know.

great Post!! Nobody knows best than the real hustlers, getting up at 5am to submit apps, schedule their day, go out on the field, get accts signed up and back to work on the computer till 8pm… Definitely one of the best industries i have been working in the past 10 years and i must say.. It is not easy, but when you look back 30-50-100 accounts later.. It only gets better and better each month!!
Great comment Jon! I hope new and potential agents appreciate the honesty and plan for a few tough months. So many expect to get in and make a fortune too quickly. Thanks again, have a great day!
Next month will be my first anniversary with nab and James Shephard. I have 85 acct and 3k+ monthly residule all from 3 months of working full time and the other 9 months working 2 days per week. My experience can be summed up as “you ripe what you sow”. The pitch taught in James videos do produce 3+/week when you work full time. I also do think not everyone can do this job but if you are willing to learn the system. It is a very rewarding business.
Thanks for the great comment James! It is a pleasure working with you and I know your success in this industry will continue to grow as a result of your hard work and sales ability.
As a new sales agent, it is good to read posts like this one.
